About the Art

Marsden Hartley painted Movement in Berlin, where he absorbed German Expressionism rather than the French modernism his contemporaries chased — and that independence is exactly why we chose it. Like Kandinsky, he wanted painting to work the way music does: non-narrative, spiritual, free of material description, channelling the turbulent energy of the city before the First World War. Its history carries real weight — shown at the Forum Exhibition of Modern American Painters, held in Alfred Stieglitz's celebrated collection, and passed to the Art Institute of Chicago through Georgia O'Keeffe's bequest. Few abstract works this early carry this much documented conviction.
