Woman in a Top Hat — Boris Grigoriev
An oversized Expressionist canvas print in pink and red. The crimson wedge in the top corner and the single scarlet glove at the lower edge throw warm colour into a living room, a bedroom or a hotel bar, and the tilted face looking down from under the black top hat meets you at eye level from the doorway.
Visual Presence
Printed two metres tall, the broad field of peach and rose skin through the middle of the picture works like a warm lamp on the wall, so a living room reads softer and closer with it up, while the block of crimson in the top corner keeps a pale room from going flat. From the far side of the space only three things carry — the black top hat, the red glove and that one tilted eye — so it holds a big wall on its own instead of needing a group of frames beside it. Walk up to it and the paint turns thin and smooth with a fine net of age cracks over the black cloth, so a window or a picture lamp raking across the wall keeps the surface shifting through the day.
About the Art
Boris Grigoriev (1886–1939), Modern, painted 1919. Boris Grigoriev (1886–1939), Russian Expressionism, painted 1919. We chose it for the moment it comes out of. Grigoriev had just finished Raseya, the peasant cycle Alexandre Benois said showed the very essence of Russia before the revolution, and 1919 is the year he left the country for good — Finland, then Berlin, Paris, and Cagnes-sur-Mer, where he died. Beside the famous sitters he painted in those years, Meyerhold and Chaliapin among them, he brought an unnamed woman this close to the picture edge: bare shoulders, a fallen slip, a man's top hat. Oil on canvas, about 63 by 71 centimetres, private collection, shown at the Tretyakov Gallery in 2011.

Each canvas is mounted on 4.2 cm (1.65 in) deep stretcher bars made from Australian pine. The canvas is tightly stretched and wrapped around these solid wooden frames, giving it a strong, gallery-grade structure with noticeable depth — ideal for large or statement pieces.
This thickness adds durability and a clean, modern presentation, allowing the artwork to stand out beautifully without additional framing.
Edge Style
By default, all stretched canvases use a mirrored edge for a clean, continuous look. If you prefer a black or white edge, please mention it in your checkout notes; otherwise, the mirrored edge will be applied automatically.
For sizes exceeding 200x300 cm, we will split the canvas into two seamless panels to meet courier shipping limitations. The split is crafted to ensure the image remains continuous and flawless across both panels. You can choose to display the panels with or without a gap for different visual effects.
If you select the framed option, each panel will be framed separately to ensure secure shipping and easy handling.
Examples:
- A 240x300 cm artwork will be divided into two panels of 120x300 cm each.
- A 240x400 cm artwork will be split into two panels of 240x200 cm each.
This approach maintains the visual impact and flexibility of oversized pieces while accommodating shipping needs.
