Quarry — Vilmos Aba-Novák
An oversized Modernist canvas print in gold and pink. Ochre seams run down a chalk-grey rock face onto a dusty pink quarry floor, and that pale warmth spreads light back into a living room, a hotel reception or a boardroom, so a tall wall gains depth instead of reading as a flat blank run.
Visual Presence
Printed two metres tall, the chalk-grey and ochre rock face works like a window cut into the wall, so a living room reads deeper and lighter with it up rather than more crowded. Nothing in it is saturated except the one red roof and the strip of blue sky along the top, which is why it sits quietly beside timber, linen and off-white walls instead of dictating the room's colour. From the far side of the space the small figures on the ladders and the horse at the cart only appear once you walk up to it, so the wall gives a large calm shape first and a scene to stand in front of second.
About the Art
Vilmos Aba-Novák (1894–1941), Expressionism, painted 1927. Vilmos Aba-Novák (1894–1941), Hungarian modernism, painted 1927. We chose it because it catches him in the year before Rome. He had spent his summers at the Szolnok and Nagybánya colonies painting village fairs and circus crowds in loud colour; here he does the reverse, draining a working stone quarry to chalk and ochre and shrinking the men to marks on the rock face. In 1928 a Hungarian Academy fellowship took him to Rome to learn fresco, and this pale matte surface already reads like a wall waiting for one. The frescoes that followed took the grand prize at the 1937 Paris World Exhibition. Slovak National Gallery, Bratislava, inv. O 2589.

Each print is custom stretched and framed at our Melbourne facility. Every piece is cut and assembled by hand, to ensure the highest quality finish.

Stretched Canvas Construction
Each canvas is mounted on 4.2 cm (1.65 in) deep stretcher bars made from Australian pine. The canvas is tightly stretched and wrapped around these solid wooden frames, giving it a strong, gallery-grade structure with noticeable depth — ideal for large or statement pieces.
This thickness adds durability and a clean, modern presentation, allowing the artwork to stand out beautifully without additional framing.
Edge Style
By default, all stretched canvases use a mirrored edge for a clean, continuous look. If you prefer a black or white edge, please mention it in your checkout notes; otherwise, the mirrored edge will be applied automatically.
For sizes exceeding 200x300 cm, we will split the canvas into two seamless panels to meet courier shipping limitations. The split is crafted to ensure the image remains continuous and flawless across both panels. You can choose to display the panels with or without a gap for different visual effects.
If you select the framed option, each panel will be framed separately to ensure secure shipping and easy handling.
Examples:
- A 240x300 cm artwork will be divided into two panels of 120x300 cm each.
- A 240x400 cm artwork will be split into two panels of 240x200 cm each.
This approach maintains the visual impact and flexibility of oversized pieces while accommodating shipping needs.
Production: 3 days.
Delivery: 1–2 weeks worldwide — tracked, insured, shipping included. Framed and stretched options are available for Australia & New Zealand only — see Worldwide Delivery.
