Three Girls — Amrita Sher-Gil

A large modernist portrait canvas print in red and green. Two thirds of the picture is one unbroken sweep of scarlet and orange cloth, so the wall of a dining room, a library or a hotel reception warms right through, while the pale mint shawl on the left keeps that heat from closing the room in.

Visual Presence

Printed two metres tall, the scarlet and orange robes throw a warm cast back into a dining room or a study, so the room reads lamplit even under flat daylight. From the far side of the room only three things register — the red mass on the right, the mint-green shawl on the left and three lowered faces between them — which is why this print holds a wide wall with nothing hung beside it. The ochre-brown ground behind the girls sits close to plaster or linen, so the canvas settles into the wall instead of cutting a hard rectangle out of it.

About the Art

Amrita Sher-Gil (1913–1941), Modern, painted 1935. Amrita Sher-Gil (1913–1941), Indian modernism, painted 1935. We chose it because it is the picture where she stopped painting Paris and started painting India — the first major canvas after she came home in 1934, and the one that took the Bombay Art Society's gold medal in 1937. The three sitters are named: Nirveer, Beant and Harbhajan Kaur, daughters of Mahinder Kaur. She wanted to paint what she called the silent images of Indians, submission and patience without pity, and she did it by flattening the space and letting line and colour carry the feeling. It hangs in the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi.
