Young Woman in White on a Red Background — Henri Matisse

A large Fauvist canvas print in red and white. The flat red ground fills the whole lower half of the picture and the long white dress cuts a calm diagonal through it, so a living room, a bedroom or a hotel lounge gains one warm block of colour that the sofa, the rug and the lamps can all be grouped around.

Visual Presence

Printed two metres tall, the red ground pushes warm colour back into the room, so a living room or a lounge stays warm on the far side where the lamps do not reach. The white dress is the one large quiet area in the picture and it falls at seated eye level, which keeps the red from wearing on a room people sit in all evening. From the doorway only three things carry — the red, the white dress and the green leaf in the top corner — so the print fills a wide wall on its own and still reads as calm.

About the Art

Henri Matisse (1869–1954), Expressionism, painted 1946. Henri Matisse (1869–1954), Fauvism, painted 1946. We chose it because it is late Matisse solving a room with colour alone: the model lies diagonally across the canvas, seen from above, and the red is not a wall behind her but the thing that builds the space. The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon records her as a young woman of Haitian origin, resting on grey fur with brown spots, the reverse of a white Tibet tiger-lined coat. It belongs to the Vence interiors painted at the villa Le Rêve, and François Campaux filmed him at work on it. Oil on canvas, 92 by 73 centimetres, Centre Pompidou AM 1991-273.
