Le Violon rouge — Raoul Dufy

A large Fauvist canvas print in red and white. One flat sheet of scarlet covers the whole wall and a tall cream panel opens at the centre of it, so a dining room, a wine bar or a hotel restaurant wall turns warm at eye level, while the violin drawn in heavy black line across the lower half keeps the red reading as a picture rather than paint.

Visual Presence

Printed two metres wide, the scarlet ground throws warm colour back across the table, so a dining room under low pendants stays warm out to the far corners after dark. The cream panel at the centre is the only cool, quiet area and it stands at standing eye level, which stops a wall of red from pressing down on seated guests. From the far side of the room three things carry — the red field, the pale panel and the black violin low in the middle — so the print holds a long sightline without asking to be read up close.

About the Art

Raoul Dufy (1877–1953), Expressionism, painted 1949. Raoul Dufy (1877–1953), Fauvism, painted 1949. We chose it as the most abstract picture in the violin series he made between 1945 and 1949, and the clearest case of his late method: he gave up the bright scattered colour he was known for and pushed a single hue across the whole canvas. Dufy grew up in a musical house and painted his first violin in 1909, Hommage à Mozart; by 1948 the instrument had become a subject in its own right rather than studio furniture. Oil on canvas, 22.5 by 27.5 centimetres, MuMa Le Havre.
