About the Art

Marsden Hartley reduced a standing figure to circle, triangle and bar in this oil on canvas paper — the emblematic geometry that runs through his boldest work, and the reason it earned catalogue space here. Its story is intimate: Hartley gave the painting to the writer Herbert J. Seligmann, a fellow member of Alfred Stieglitz's New York circle. It later entered the SMK, Denmark's national gallery, and featured in the major Hartley retrospective at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art — a rare European home for the American modernist. We chose it for that emblem-bold clarity: few works say so much with three shapes.
