Mastenwald — Felix Nussbaum
A panoramic Surrealist canvas print in brown and green. The masts run the whole width with no water and no horizon under them, so a dining room, a hotel reception or a long living-room wall gets one unbroken band of dark verticals against a grey-green sky, with the rust-red sail at the right end drawing the eye the full length of the wall.
Visual Presence
Printed two to three metres wide the masts stand taller than the people sitting under them, so a dining room or a reception wall reads as depth rather than as a picture: you look through the rigging, not at it. The grey-green sky and the dark brown spars give almost nothing back, so the wall itself recedes and the table, the chairs and the lamps in front of it come forward. From the far side of the room the only thing that carries is the rust-red sail and the small orange pennant at the right end, one warm point in a cool field, and the fish, the lantern and the sailor with his pail arrive only when someone walks up to it.
About the Art
Felix Nussbaum (1904–1944), Expressionism, painted 1938. Felix Nussbaum (1904–1944), New Objectivity, painted 1938. We chose it for what the title promises and the painting delivers: Mastenwald means forest of masts, and Nussbaum paints it literally, with no water, no hulls and no horizon, only spars and rigging growing up like trees. He had fled Germany for Belgium in 1935 and spent two years on the coast at Ostend with the painter Felka Platek before moving to Brussels. Among the tackle he has hung a dried fish, a lantern and a pale torso with a dark chignon, as though they were part of the rigging. Each canvas is mounted on 4.2 cm (1.65 in) deep stretcher bars made from Australian pine. The canvas is tightly stretched and wrapped around these solid wooden frames, giving it a strong, gallery-grade structure with noticeable depth — ideal for large or statement pieces.
This thickness adds durability and a clean, modern presentation, allowing the artwork to stand out beautifully without additional framing.
Edge Style
By default, all stretched canvases use a mirrored edge for a clean, continuous look. If you prefer a black or white edge, please mention it in your checkout notes; otherwise, the mirrored edge will be applied automatically.
For sizes exceeding 200x300 cm, we will split the canvas into two seamless panels to meet courier shipping limitations. The split is crafted to ensure the image remains continuous and flawless across both panels. You can choose to display the panels with or without a gap for different visual effects.
If you select the framed option, each panel will be framed separately to ensure secure shipping and easy handling.
Examples:
- A 240x300 cm artwork will be divided into two panels of 120x300 cm each.
- A 240x400 cm artwork will be split into two panels of 240x200 cm each.
