Avontuur — Frits Van den Berghe
A tall Expressionist canvas print in brown and blue. Most of it is bare warm cream with the paint left thin enough to show the weave, and the two brown streaks fall the whole height of it like curtains pulled back, so a bedroom, a stairwell or a hotel reception gets a quiet upright wall with one small blue window of sea and a sailing ship opening near the top.
Visual Presence
Printed two to three metres tall it is mostly bare warm cream, so it lifts a wall instead of loading it — a bedroom or a stairwell reads lighter and taller with it up, never darker. The brown streaks run from the top edge almost to the floor of the picture and drag the eye upward, which is what lets a single canvas hold a narrow high wall that nothing else fits. From the far side of a reception or a landing only three things land — the two raised arms, the small blue square of sea and the black bars along the bottom — and the rest stays quiet cream, so the room keeps its calm.
About the Art
Frits Van den Berghe (1883–1939), Expressionism, painted 1924. Frits Van den Berghe (1883–1939), Flemish Expressionism, painted 1924. We chose it for how little it spends. Van den Berghe helped start the Latem School with Constant Permeke and Gustave De Smet, and here he drops oil for pencil, watercolour and gouache: a nude with both arms flung wide, a gabled house, a tall ship, a woman watching from a window. The Museum of Fine Arts Ghent, which holds it, reads it as the opening work of his cycle De vrouw, and describes the longing for freedom said with a light gesture, in a few lines and brushstrokes.

Stretched Canvas Construction
Each canvas is mounted on 4.2 cm (1.65 in) deep stretcher bars made from Australian pine. The canvas is tightly stretched and wrapped around these solid wooden frames, giving it a strong, gallery-grade structure with noticeable depth — ideal for large or statement pieces.
This thickness adds durability and a clean, modern presentation, allowing the artwork to stand out beautifully without additional framing.
Edge Style
By default, all stretched canvases use a mirrored edge for a clean, continuous look. If you prefer a black or white edge, please mention it in your checkout notes; otherwise, the mirrored edge will be applied automatically.
For sizes exceeding 200x300 cm, we will split the canvas into two seamless panels to meet courier shipping limitations. The split is crafted to ensure the image remains continuous and flawless across both panels. You can choose to display the panels with or without a gap for different visual effects.
If you select the framed option, each panel will be framed separately to ensure secure shipping and easy handling.
Examples:
- A 240x300 cm artwork will be divided into two panels of 120x300 cm each.
- A 240x400 cm artwork will be split into two panels of 240x200 cm each.
This approach maintains the visual impact and flexibility of oversized pieces while accommodating shipping needs.
