Portuguese Woman — Robert Delaunay
A giant Cubist canvas print in yellow and blue. Rings of yellow and orange turn across the whole middle of the wall while the blue and green palm holds the left edge cool, so a dining room, a hotel lobby or a reception wall takes its warmth from the canvas rather than from the lights above it.
Visual Presence
Hung two metres wide above a dining table, the ring-on-ring yellow and orange throws a warm, sun-coloured light back into the room, so the table below reads lit before anyone switches a lamp on. The blue and green palm down the left side keeps a cool weight against all that yellow, which stops a bright room tipping into glare. From the doorway it reads as a field of turning circles, and the woman in her orange striped skirt only separates out of the pattern once you are standing at the table.
About the Art
Robert Delaunay (1885–1941), Modern, painted 1916. Robert Delaunay (1885–1941), Orphism, painted 1916. We chose it because this is where his colour wheels meet a real market. The discs he had painted as abstraction a few years earlier now turn into melons, shawls and a woman in a striped skirt. Robert and Sonia sat out the war at Vila do Conde near Porto, and he wrote that the sun there was closer and more humane than Madrid's. To hold that light he mixed his pigment with wax, a method learned from the Mexican painter Ángel Zárraga and dropped as soon as he left Portugal. The Thyssen-Bornemisza knows it as The Large Portuguese, 180 by 205 centimetres.

Each canvas is mounted on 4.2 cm (1.65 in) deep stretcher bars made from Australian pine. The canvas is tightly stretched and wrapped around these solid wooden frames, giving it a strong, gallery-grade structure with noticeable depth — ideal for large or statement pieces.
This thickness adds durability and a clean, modern presentation, allowing the artwork to stand out beautifully without additional framing.
Edge Style
By default, all stretched canvases use a mirrored edge for a clean, continuous look. If you prefer a black or white edge, please mention it in your checkout notes; otherwise, the mirrored edge will be applied automatically.
For sizes exceeding 200x300 cm, we will split the canvas into two seamless panels to meet courier shipping limitations. The split is crafted to ensure the image remains continuous and flawless across both panels. You can choose to display the panels with or without a gap for different visual effects.
If you select the framed option, each panel will be framed separately to ensure secure shipping and easy handling.
Examples:
- A 240x300 cm artwork will be divided into two panels of 120x300 cm each.
- A 240x400 cm artwork will be split into two panels of 240x200 cm each.
This approach maintains the visual impact and flexibility of oversized pieces while accommodating shipping needs.
