Three Cats — Franz Marc

A huge Expressionist Abstract canvas print in red and yellow. The big red cat spreads warm colour across a living room wall from end to end, while the striped yellow cat and the green fans of grass below hold a hotel reception or an executive office wall from right across the floor.

Visual Presence

At two to three metres wide the red and orange masses throw a warm cast over the whole wall, so a pale living room reads richer under lamplight. The teal-green passages and the heavy black outlines keep that warmth in check, so the wall stays lively instead of hot. From the far side of the room it reads as three big animal shapes in red, white and yellow; up close the loose brushed planes and the thin curved green lines come forward.

About the Art

Franz Marc (1880–1916), Expressionism, painted 1913. Franz Marc spent his short career trying to paint animals from the inside rather than as scenery, and Three Cats is where that turns playful. We chose it because the three cats, one red, one black and white, one striped yellow, are pulled apart into planes and then locked back together by colour, so the picture still reads clearly at wall scale. Marc co-founded the Blue Rider circle with Wassily Kandinsky and was killed at Verdun at thirty-six, which makes work like this a short, concentrated run. The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf holds the original.
