Ariadne — John William Waterhouse
A huge Pre-Raphaelite canvas print in red and green. The sleeping figure's scarlet gown pools one unmissable centre of warmth on a dining room, hotel lounge or bedroom wall, while the dark garden and blue harbour behind her keep the whole wall deep and quiet.
Visual Presence
At two to three metres the scarlet gown works on the room like a lit hearth — a single warm centre everything else arranges itself around, strong enough to hold a long dining wall or a dark-panelled lounge. The deep leaf-greens and harbour blues stay recessive under evening lamplight, so the piece gains drama at night where brighter prints wash out. From across the room the two leopards and the departing sail surface slowly, giving guests something new to find on every second look.
About the Art
John William Waterhouse (1849–1917), Academic, painted 1898. John William Waterhouse paints the last unknowing moment of the myth: Ariadne, who gave Theseus the thread that led him out of the labyrinth, sleeps on while his ship slips out of the harbour of Naxos behind her. The two leopards at her feet are the painter's quiet promise — they belong to Bacchus, the god who will find her on this island and marry her. We chose it because Waterhouse compresses the whole story, betrayal and rescue alike, into one still figure in red, the drama held entirely in what she does not yet know. The oil is held in a private collection.

Stretched Canvas Construction
Each canvas is mounted on 4.2 cm (1.65 in) deep stretcher bars made from Australian pine. The canvas is tightly stretched and wrapped around these solid wooden frames, giving it a strong, gallery-grade structure with noticeable depth — ideal for large or statement pieces.
This thickness adds durability and a clean, modern presentation, allowing the artwork to stand out beautifully without additional framing.
Edge Style
By default, all stretched canvases use a mirrored edge for a clean, continuous look. If you prefer a black or white edge, please mention it in your checkout notes; otherwise, the mirrored edge will be applied automatically.
For sizes exceeding 200x300 cm, we will split the canvas into two seamless panels to meet courier shipping limitations. The split is crafted to ensure the image remains continuous and flawless across both panels. You can choose to display the panels with or without a gap for different visual effects.
If you select the framed option, each panel will be framed separately to ensure secure shipping and easy handling.
Examples:
- A 240x300 cm artwork will be divided into two panels of 120x300 cm each.
- A 240x400 cm artwork will be split into two panels of 240x200 cm each.
This approach maintains the visual impact and flexibility of oversized pieces while accommodating shipping needs.
