Visual Presence
A dark-winged figure of Night, crowned and hushing the viewer with a finger to her lips, glides across a star-strewn sky in robes of deep sapphire blue. Beneath her sheltering wings drift a train of sleeping and waking cherubs, scattered poppies and a flock of small birds. The palette is a saturated nocturne of midnight and cobalt blue, lit by glinting stars and warm flesh tones, intimate and enveloping.
About the Art
Edward Robert Hughes drew the title of this celebrated watercolour from W. E. Henley's poem Margaritae Sorori, personifying Night as a winged, crowned woman leading a procession of infant souls across the heavens. Poppies, emblems of sleep, fall from her robe as she calls for silence. A nephew of the painter Arthur Hughes and long-time studio assistant to William Holman Hunt, Hughes was closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and renowned for luminous, fantastical scenes. The painting is held in Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, where it remains among the most loved works in the collection.

Stretched Canvas Construction
Each canvas is mounted on 4.2 cm (1.65 in) deep stretcher bars made from Australian pine. The canvas is tightly stretched and wrapped around these solid wooden frames, giving it a strong, gallery-grade structure with noticeable depth — ideal for large or statement pieces.
This thickness adds durability and a clean, modern presentation, allowing the artwork to stand out beautifully without additional framing.
Edge Style
By default, all stretched canvases use a mirrored edge for a clean, continuous look. If you prefer a black or white edge, please mention it in your checkout notes; otherwise, the mirrored edge will be applied automatically.
For sizes exceeding 200x300 cm, we will split the canvas into two seamless panels to meet courier shipping limitations. The split is crafted to ensure the image remains continuous and flawless across both panels. You can choose to display the panels with or without a gap for different visual effects.
If you select the framed option, each panel will be framed separately to ensure secure shipping and easy handling.
Examples:
- A 240x300 cm artwork will be divided into two panels of 120x300 cm each.
- A 240x400 cm artwork will be split into two panels of 240x200 cm each.
