The Ten Largest, No. 10, Old Age — Hilma af Klint

A giant geometric abstract canvas print in white and red. Its ordered chequered field brings calm structure to a reception, hallway or study wall.

Visual Presence

The cream ground reads almost architectural on a wall — light and spare, letting the central chequered grid of brick-red, dusty blue, mustard and rose act as a quiet piece of geometry at the heart of the room. From a distance it brings order and stillness; up close the looping arabesques soften the grid's precision. It commands a considered wall — a study, a hallway axis, a minimalist living room — without ever raising the volume.

About the Art

Hilma af Klint closed The Ten Largest with this canvas, and a cycle's final word earns wall space on merit: the exuberant spirals of the earlier stages resolve into a calm chequered field of red, mustard, blue and rose squares framed by looping lines — an ordered summation of the whole suite within The Paintings for the Temple. The series remained largely unknown for decades before the Guggenheim Museum's survey of her work in New York became the most visited exhibition in the Guggenheim's history. The Hilma af Klint Foundation preserves the paintings, shown at Moderna Museet in Stockholm — the quiet, resolved close we most wanted on a wall.
