A large Impressionist canvas print in blue and white. The breaking white surf throws cool, moving sea light down a hallway, across a bathroom wall or into a hotel reception, opening the wall onto cold Channel air.
Visual Presence
From across the room the canvas reads as one cool field of storm blue over spray white, cooling the space the way a window onto open water does. The foam holds most of the light, so even a windowless hallway or bathroom borrows a pale, daylit glow from the wall. Step closer and the thick knifed-on whites break into churning texture, giving a corridor something in motion every time someone passes.
About the Art
Pierre-Auguste Renoir rarely painted weather like this. The painter of sunlit leisure told Ambroise Vollard he had never been able to stand the cold, yet here he gives the Channel in full storm, churning surf under a bleak overcast sky. He made it on the Normandy coast during a stay with his patron Paul Bérard, who kept a private beach at Berneval. The Art Institute of Chicago, which holds it in the Potter Palmer Collection, notes an astounding variety of brush and palette-knife work: foam laid on with such gusto you can almost hear it hiss. We chose it as the rare Renoir made of raw sea weather.

Stretched Canvas Construction
Each canvas is mounted on 4.2 cm (1.65 in) deep stretcher bars made from Australian pine. The canvas is tightly stretched and wrapped around these solid wooden frames, giving it a strong, gallery-grade structure with noticeable depth — ideal for large or statement pieces.
This thickness adds durability and a clean, modern presentation, allowing the artwork to stand out beautifully without additional framing.
Edge Style
By default, all stretched canvases use a mirrored edge for a clean, continuous look. If you prefer a black or white edge, please mention it in your checkout notes; otherwise, the mirrored edge will be applied automatically.
For sizes exceeding 200x300 cm, we will split the canvas into two seamless panels to meet courier shipping limitations. The split is crafted to ensure the image remains continuous and flawless across both panels. You can choose to display the panels with or without a gap for different visual effects.
If you select the framed option, each panel will be framed separately to ensure secure shipping and easy handling.
Examples:
- A 240x300 cm artwork will be divided into two panels of 120x300 cm each.
- A 240x400 cm artwork will be split into two panels of 240x200 cm each.
This approach maintains the visual impact and flexibility of oversized pieces while accommodating shipping needs.
