Counter-Composition VI — Theo van Doesburg
An oversized Geometric Abstract canvas print in black and white. Two broad black bars cross low and to the right of the square and then run straight out to the corners, so in a dining room, an office lobby or on a reception wall the eye lands on the crossing and travels outward, while the white ground keeps a wide wall bright instead of loading it with dark paint.
Visual Presence
At two metres square the white ground gives back most of the room's own light, so a dining room or a reception wall gets brighter even with two heavy black bars on it. The bars are wide enough to read from the far end of a long room, and because they sit on the diagonal they carry the eye across the wall rather than stopping it at the frame edge. Close up, a fine ruled grid of slate lines comes up over the whole white field — a second, quieter layer only the people sitting with it will find.
About the Art
Theo van Doesburg (1883–1931), Modern, painted 1925. Theo van Doesburg (1883-1931), De Stijl, painted 1925. We chose it because the argument that ended De Stijl is visible in one move: the bars run at forty-five degrees to the edges of the canvas, and that tilt is what "counter-composition" means. Mondrian would not accept the diagonal and left the movement over it; van Doesburg named his answer Elementarism and set it out in a manifesto in De Stijl in 1926. The fine ruled grid he laid the bars out on is still visible across the white ground. Oil on canvas, fifty centimetres square, held by Tate, accession T03374.

Stretched Canvas Construction
Each canvas is mounted on 4.2 cm (1.65 in) deep stretcher bars made from Australian pine. The canvas is tightly stretched and wrapped around these solid wooden frames, giving it a strong, gallery-grade structure with noticeable depth — ideal for large or statement pieces.
This thickness adds durability and a clean, modern presentation, allowing the artwork to stand out beautifully without additional framing.
Edge Style
By default, all stretched canvases use a mirrored edge for a clean, continuous look. If you prefer a black or white edge, please mention it in your checkout notes; otherwise, the mirrored edge will be applied automatically.
For sizes exceeding 200x300 cm, we will split the canvas into two seamless panels to meet courier shipping limitations. The split is crafted to ensure the image remains continuous and flawless across both panels. You can choose to display the panels with or without a gap for different visual effects.
If you select the framed option, each panel will be framed separately to ensure secure shipping and easy handling.
Examples:
- A 240x300 cm artwork will be divided into two panels of 120x300 cm each.
- A 240x400 cm artwork will be split into two panels of 240x200 cm each.
