Visual Presence
The sepia-toned albumen print is dominated by a fallen giant tree trunk stretching diagonally across the lower two-thirds of the frame, its fissured bark and hollow openings rendered in fine textural detail. Two small figures stand atop the log in the middle distance, anchoring the composition and conveying the tree's enormous scale against the flanking standing timber. Pale, bleached wood surfaces contrast against deeper forest shadow, and the soft diffusion of light through the canopy gives the scene a quiet, somewhat sombre mood.
About the Art
Carleton E. Watkins documents a fallen giant sequoia known as "The Father of the Forest" in Calaveras Grove, a tree measured at 112 feet in circumference. To capture images such as this, Watkins travelled to the Mariposa and Calaveras Groves carrying a mammoth-plate camera that produced 18 by 22 inch glass negatives — an extraordinary technical undertaking for the period. His photographs of the western forests and Yosemite are widely credited as the primary visual evidence that persuaded the US Congress and Abraham Lincoln to set aside Yosemite Valley as protected land, establishing the precedent for the entire US National Park system. This print is held in The Met's open-access collection.

Each canvas is mounted on 4.2 cm (1.65 in) deep stretcher bars made from Australian pine. The canvas is tightly stretched and wrapped around these solid wooden frames, giving it a strong, gallery-grade structure with noticeable depth — ideal for large or statement pieces.
This thickness adds durability and a clean, modern presentation, allowing the artwork to stand out beautifully without additional framing.
Edge Style
By default, all stretched canvases use a mirrored edge for a clean, continuous look. If you prefer a black or white edge, please mention it in your checkout notes; otherwise, the mirrored edge will be applied automatically.
For sizes exceeding 200x300 cm, we will split the canvas into two seamless panels to meet courier shipping limitations. The split is crafted to ensure the image remains continuous and flawless across both panels. You can choose to display the panels with or without a gap for different visual effects.
If you select the framed option, each panel will be framed separately to ensure secure shipping and easy handling.
Examples:
- A 240x300 cm artwork will be divided into two panels of 120x300 cm each.
- A 240x400 cm artwork will be split into two panels of 240x200 cm each.
