Pulled in black ink on loud chrome-yellow paper — a colour Gauguin tied to modernity after his season with Van Gogh — it remembers his months on Martinique: women by the sea, resting and walking with baskets of fruit on their heads, under a title borrowed from La Fontaine's fable of the grasshoppers and the ants.
