The forest either side is deep green and blue-black, so this print absorbs light rather than bouncing it back: a bright room settles, and after dark the pale bone-coloured pole is the one thing that catches the lamps. She had spent years recording poles in Indigenous villages along the coast; Lawren Harris told her to go after \"the tremendous elusive what lies behind\" them, and through the 1930s the forest took over her canvases. This is the hinge: a pole she sketched on Haida Gwaii, painted pale and whole straight down the centre, with the green woods already swelling in from both sides and opening dark mouths behind it.
