The white gable sits low in the picture at about standing height, which makes it the only thing that carries from the far side of the room — everyone walks towards it. Carr sketched the small Catholic mission church at Yuquot, on Nootka Island, during her 1928 trip up the coast, then built it into a wall of forest back in the studio. Lawren Harris of the Group of Seven bought the finished painting, hung it in his own house and called it her best work — praise she could never accept. It went to the National Gallery of Canada in 1930 and to the Tate in 1938.
