From the far side of the space only two things carry — the dark spire driving up the centre and the block of red roof at the right — which is why it holds a tall wall on its own instead of needing a group of frames around it. Rohlfs came to Soest in 1904 and worked there two summers; his biographer Paul Vogt records that the winding lanes and the four church towers gave him a subject of unexpected pull, and Rohlfs wrote that he had been enthusiastic about Soest all summer. He met Emil Nolde there in 1906, the start of a lifelong friendship. Years later he was still painting these towers — and St. Patrocli, whose green sandstone tower locals call the Tower of Westphalia, comes back here in red and navy.
