The picture is mostly deep ultramarine and rust, so it throws almost no light back — it pushes the wall backwards and leaves the pale beard and the two palms as the brightest things in the space, which is why it wants one lamp aimed at it rather than an evenly bright room. Twenty years later the Nazis hung seventeen of his paintings in the 1937 Degenerate Art exhibition and expelled him from the Prussian Academy.
