El Greco — Doménikos Theotokópoulos — painted Saint Francis so often that at least a dozen versions of this composition survive, evidence of the saint's enormous popularity in Toledo, where the Greek painter made his career. Every object is deliberate: the book stands for Francis's devotional study, the skull for the certainty of death, and the crucifix receives his prayer as the painting asks the viewer to meditate on the saint himself. Possibly still in El Greco's possession when he died, it entered the Art Institute of Chicago through the Robert A. Waller Memorial Fund.
