Bohumil Kubišta joined the Austro-Hungarian army two years before he made this, so the late work comes from a serving officer, not a full-time painter. We chose it because it takes his Cubo-Expressionist language, hard facets and hot colour, and turns it onto a subject far from the Prague still lifes and street scenes around it: a snake charmer with his pipe, a snake rising out of its coil, a harbour of small sailing boats behind them. Kubišta had taught himself optics and philosophy and built his pictures from colour and geometry.
